Thailand is on a path to revolutionize its urban landscape with a plan to establish 105 smart cities by 2027. This ambitious initiative, part of the Thailand 4.0 digitalization strategy, aims to enhance the quality of life through technology and innovation.
Engineering Smart Cities
Engineers are central to this transformation, driving the development of key technologies:
● IoT Connectivity: Engineers are deploying 5G networks and IoT devices across cities like Ban Chang, enabling real-time management of traffic, environmental monitoring, and public safety. This infrastructure is crucial for addressing Thailand’s urban challenges.
● Smart Infrastructure: The installation of 5G smart poles, equipped with sensors and SOS buttons, ensures constant monitoring of environmental conditions and provides immediate communication in emergencies. These systems are designed to be resilient and responsive, catering to the needs of Thailand's growing urban areas.
● Sustainability: A core goal of the smart city initiative is sustainability. Engineers are focusing on energy-efficient buildings, clean energy solutions, and smart grids, reducing the environmental impact while supporting urban populations sustainably.
Government Support and Collaboration
The Thai government plays a vital role, funding and supporting projects like the $37 billion smart city in Chonburi and the 1.35 trillion baht investment in the Eastern Economic Corridor. These efforts are crucial in scaling the smart city concept across the country.
